Unfortunately dealing with scammers is a daily occurrence every day for Poseidon Investigations that’s probably because the owner of Poseidon Investigations is single. But just because I am a qualified Private Investigator doesn’t mean I’m not susceptible to scams. Even I have been conned by someone who claims to be someone else.
As time as grown scammers are becoming even more sophisticated and clever. Even managing to con the cleverest of people!! Now the latest scam to watch out for is where the subject pretends to be a massage therapist which later turns out to be an escort. Plus these so called massage therapists all use the same payment method link. That probably links to a sophisticated crime syndicate.
There is even scams out there where the subject shows off her nude body by stripping and is actually recording the recipient/victim to blackmail them to send money to the scammer. The way you know this happening is because the scammer claims their microphone is broken when in fact they are recording your reactions to the nudity. Stating “now show me yours!!” This is a complete set up, because the scammer then sends you a recorded video of you showing your nudity to them. In order to blackmail you. They do this by threatening to send the nude video to mutual friends in order to extort money out of you. This is a very dangerous scam done to destroy your reputation and to extort money out of you at the same time!!
Section 21 of the Theft Act 1968. The act explains UK blackmail law, in legal terms, to be when one makes unwarranted demands with menaces in order to attain personal gain or project loss on another. … If you meet the definition, then you may be liable of a blackmail charge unless you satisfy one of the defences.
After reading an article by Action Fraud and having reported an issue of fraud myself. I would like to state that any issue such as that mentioned must be reported to Action Fraud. 9/10 times your bank will refund the money you are defrauded out of as well. But in extreme cases it has been known for the victim of the fraud to be made liable for the debt that they incurred. That is why it’s so important to be made aware of the latest scams. And to hire Private Investigators to do background checks into these so called potential suitors.
Here are my tips for clear signs of a scammer/catfish
- Never answers the phone when you call them
- Always directs you to a site to pay to meet them up. All verifications sites are a scam
- Says they live near you, when they don’t at all
- Talks to you all hours of the night, when most people would go asleep
- Can’t speak English well
- Talks about cryptocurrency all the time
The old way of discovering on whether a scammer is a scammer was by doing a google reverse image search. Now however that doesn’t seem to work as well. The best solution to deal with a scammer is to block their profile and report them.
